A Turn of the Meter

The indoor air felt still, so I stepped past the threshold and walked out onto the street. Step. Step. A vintage mechanical parking meter stood anchored along the curb. I stopped, observing the circular dial behind its round glass lens. Extending one bulky hand, I gripped the heavy metal knob on its side. Slow, deliberate torque applied. Click-clack. An internal spring engaged, advancing the painted needle two notches forward. The cast-iron housing vibrated with a muted, rhythmic rattle before locking tight. I kept two blunt fingers pressed against the cold metal, listening to the tiny escapement wheel tick down.#Fnaf
