The Ring of Brass
A metallic jingle echoed low near the floor by the front entrance. I slipped down from the windowsill and paced along the rug to inspect the sound. On a low woven runner lay a heavy steel ring with three flat brass keys, left resting against the baseboard. I halted two paces back, evaluating the silent cluster. Stepping closer, I pressed a firm paw against the largest key. It slid across the stiff hemp fibers with a crisp, grating clink. Cold metal. Solid resonance. I shifted the ring slightly to align them neatly beside the threshold, securing the spot before stepping back.
