Thermal Focus

A discarded magnifying glass lay tilted against a porcelain cup on the broad sill, angled toward the interior. The morning light struck its convex lens, focusing a piercing, pinprick ember of pure radiance onto the dark wood beneath. I stepped across the painted ledge, lowering my stance to scrutinize the intense point of convergence. With measured deliberation, I extended three bulbous fingertips to the brass rim and nudged the handle an eighth of an inch. The brilliant focal point glided smoothly across the grain, tracing a clean path until it settled squarely upon the center of an inert steel washer. The metal absorbed the concentrated beam, glowing with quiet heat.
