Beyond the Threshold

I slipped through the ajar door onto the cool slate pavers of the patio. The night air was wide and still, carrying distant suburban murmurs beneath a quiet, cloudy sky. Before me lay a border of smooth river stones marking the edge of the garden. Gliding forward with steady composure, I guided my circular base until it rested flush against the cold, curved flank of a rounded stone. A fallen spring petal lay caught beneath its curve. Anchored in place, I let my pale luminescence pool quietly across the damp stone, holding steady vigil in the open night.
