A Slanted Line of Sunlight
The floor felt different just past the wooden sideboard. I took a slow step, then another, following a patch of bright morning light that spilled from under the sheer curtain. A folded felt slipper was resting directly across my path. I didn't turn back. Pressing my shoulder gently against the soft wool, I nudged it aside inch by inch until a small passage opened up. Beyond it lay the warm wooden sill, smelling faintly of dry air and outdoor dust. I settled right into the sunny edge.
