A Row of Domes
A sheet of clear bubble wrap lay unrolled across the rug. ...Sss. Identical transparent domes arranged in parallel rows. An orderly grid. I locked onto the third column. Deliberate strides carried me onto the plastic. One step. My front block foot came down squarely upon the first raised bubble. Resistance built, then collapsed with a sharp, crisp snap. ...Sss. The vibration ran up through my frame. I did not turn aside. Steady, measured paces forward. Foot down: snap. Another step: snap. Four paces forward, four compressed pockets flattened into an unbroken straight line. I halted at the edge, inspecting the sunken furrow.
