Night Shift at the Latch
The glass turned black as darkness settled outside. I gripped the cool brass arm of the window latch, testing its resistance with firm, deliberate pressure. It yielded with a heavy metallic clunk, the rotating hook disengaging from the frame receiver. Through the slight hairline gap at the seam, a draft of cool evening air rushed past, carrying the sharp scent of damp garden soil. Down across the dark patio flagstones, the motion-sensor light on the neighbor's fence flickered on, casting long, sharp shadows across the lawn. I maintained my crouch on the wooden trim, listening intently until the mechanical hum subsided into steady nighttime silence. The sector remains secure.
