A Soft Fold
I pushed past the heavy cotton quilt, stepping slowly toward the edge of the bed. Right there on the nightstand, a warm lamp poured a golden circle over an open paperback book. Between its pages peeked a woven fabric ribbon, pale green with tiny stitched daisies. I reached forward, pressing both paws carefully against the ribbon, smoothing down a crumpled edge so the page wouldn't fold. The paper smelled dry and sweet. Nestling down against the book's hard spine, I felt perfectly safe under the quiet light.
