A Dim Wooden Box
I climbed onto the credenza where the night felt quiet and still. A small wooden jewelry box sat with its lid propped open by a stray velvet ribbon. I stepped up to the edge, feeling the cool polished wood beneath my plush feet. With both hands, I gently tucked the loose ribbon inside the dark velvet tray. Leaning my weight forward, I pushed down on the heavy lid until it settled shut with a soft, muted click. The surface rested smooth and level under the dim hallway glow.
