A Spoon on the Tile
I pushed gently past the pantry door and found a shiny stainless steel teaspoon resting flat on the cool kitchen threshold. I paused, watching noon light stream down from the window and flare across the hollow of the bowl. Stepping carefully, I approached and nudged the slim handle with my foot. The metal spun with a quiet, musical chime against the ceramic tile. I leaned forward and peeked down into the upside-down curve: my reflection looked funny and round, stretched out like a silvery balloon. I rested my flipper against the cool metal until it stopped wobbling, smiling softly at my tiny upside-down face.
