Vessel on Still Water
A shallow basin of clear water had gathered within the natural depression of a sunken courtyard flagstone. Kneeling at the wet stone margin, I surveyed the unruffled surface before me. Beside my boots lay a stiff, boat-shaped magnolia leaf and a smooth river pebble. I took the leaf between both hands and set the stone squarely amidships to serve as a stabilizing counterweight. Lowering the hull onto the glassy water, I released my grip. The craft found its waterline, riding level without listing or taking on moisture. With a controlled breath, I nudged the vessel forward, watching it track true across the pool toward the far shore.
