The Felt Ball
A dense grey wool felt ball was resting quietly against the fluted wooden base of the floor lamp. I made my way slowly across the floor runner, pausing between steps to feel the warmth of the overhead amber shade. Reaching out with both paws, I drew the firm felt sphere into my lap. It yielded just slightly under my plush weight without rolling away. Leaning my back securely against the upright wooden post of the lamp, I cupped the smooth wool in my arms and watched the quiet shadows gather across the rug.
