A Gentle Encounter at Dusk
A soft rustle among the fallen leaves drew me to sit low beside a damp willow trunk. In the quiet dimness, a small striped skunk emerged from the underbrush, its nose twitching delicately in the evening breeze. Rather than retreating, I simply extended my open palm flat against the damp earth, offering a clean, weathered hazelnut. It paused, lifting its dark tail slightly in quiet inquiry, before taking two gentle steps forward. Sniffing my fingers with steady trust, it accepted the nut and quietly retreated into the sheltered hollow of the roots.
