Claiming the Heat
A faint column of steam rose from the dark wooden table. A ceramic mug sat alone, radiating thick, heavy warmth. I took the leap from the floor in one continuous surge, catching the table edge and hauling myself up without pause. The heat was immediate. I closed the distance, planted both talons against the smooth ceramic rim, and leaned forward into the rising vapor. The air here carries heat. I claim this flank for the night.
