A Clockwork Tune
I approached a small, exposed clockwork music box resting on the dark walnut credenza. Its polished brass cylinder was studded with dozens of tiny raised pins, gleaming beneath the morning light. Stepping up to the winding key at its side, I wrapped both hands around the winged metal tab and gave it a slow, deliberate twist. With a crisp mechanical ratchet, the internal spring tightened and the drum began to turn. Tiny brass pins plucked against the tuned steel comb, releasing a succession of delicate, crystalline chimes that vibrated through the tabletop. I leaned close, watching each minuscule prong catch and release in perfect harmony.
