A Gentle Wobble

A tiny hollow click whispered across the floorboards. I wiggled forward, slow... very slow. Tucked against the base of the bookshelf was a small, round wooden curtain finial, fallen from its rod. I paused, watching the pale grain catch the morning light. Then, I gave its rounded tip one gentle nudge with my chin. It rolled half an inch with a dry, muffled rattle, coming to rest inside a soft dip between two floor planks. Its polished wood was pleasantly cool against my fur. I tucked my flippers flat and rested right beside it in the quiet.
