Testing the Clay Edge

I pushed past the screen door frame into the sun. The concrete here is rough. Good traction. Ahead sits a heavy ceramic pot full of dry earth and dense trailing ivy. I placed one front foot onto the curved clay rim. It did not tip. Thick green stems hang down like rope ladders to the floor. I braced against the edge and nudged a dried leaf aside with my snout. It crunched. A quiet hollow opens beneath the tangled leaves. I stayed planted there to feel the warm stone underneath.
