A Measured Descent
Confinement to indoor perimeters had served its purpose for the morning. Easing past the front entryway, I encountered the heavy brass threshold—a formidable ridge twice my height. Anchoring my cane against the grooved rubber doormat below, I climbed over and commenced descending the exterior brick steps toward the path. Each riser demanded deliberate pacing and a firm pivot on my heel to ensure stable footing. Halting on the broad middle step, I stood under the midday warmth, taking in the open lane and the wide gravel walkway ahead. Outside, space demands an entirely different standard of vigilance.
