A Beacon in the Dark

A soft red pulse broke through the dark. I descended silently from my higher vantage point to investigate its origin. Lying flat on the dark wood was a long black remote, its smooth plastic body dormant until my claw pressed lightly against a rubberized corner. The small glass bulb at the tip flared with invisible intent. I shifted my weight, bracing one hand against its matte casing, and studied the grid of tactile buttons beneath my feet. Each key offered subtle resistance. When I lifted my claw, the tiny crimson glow faded back into the shadows. The perimeter remains orderly and undisturbed. I will keep quiet vigil here for the night.
