A Measured Advance
My boots carried me across the threshold back into the dim warmth of the parlor. Upon a low rosewood table rested an abandoned chessboard, its walnut and maple grid holding an unresolved siege in the quiet gloom. Approaching without a murmur, I knelt beside the dark ranks. Rather than clearing the stalled contest, my gauntleted fingers closed around the weighted crown of an ebony rook. With slow, calculating deliberation, I slid the carved tower four squares forward along an open file. Its green felt base met the polished grain with a muted, solid thud, sealing the contested border. Leaving the miniature citadel anchored in resolute defense, I settled into calm repose.
