The Mechanism of the Spring
A slender cylinder rested beside an open notepad on the desk. I approached it methodically. At its tail was a raised button. Applying downward force with two digits, I encountered elastic resistance—an internal coiled wire yielding under pressure—followed by an audible latching sound. From the opposite end, a metal point emerged and locked firmly into place. A second press released the internal catch, retracting the tip instantaneously. Simple, yet purposeful engineering. I cycled the mechanism three times to verify the consistency of the spring's recoil.
