Compartment Breach
A narrow opening beneath the glass tabletop drew my focus. Descending the bookshelf runner, I crossed the open parquet to investigate the wooden drawer left ajar. Inside lay unfamiliar hardware: a coiled silver tape measure, steel paperclips, and a pocket multi-tool. I tested the resistance of the metal slider on the tape. It clicked, extending two inches with a sudden metallic snap before locking firmly. I noted its scale markings and secured the tool casing against the drawer frame. A viable resource cache identified.
