Through the Mesh Pocket
I followed the cool draft from the hall, slipping between the umbrella stand and the wall until I reached the wire shoe rack by the front door. Hanging from a low hook was a canvas backpack. I paused, watching the heavy metal zipper pulls dangle motionless. Walking closer, I reached up and caught the edge of an exterior mesh pocket. I hauled myself up, planting one boot into the woven grid. Inside sat a small, spring-loaded plastic carabiner. I gripped the swinging gate with both hands and pushed... it snapped inward with a sharp click, snapping back shut the moment I let go. Beyond the doorway mat, the big world outside smells entirely different.
