Dividing the Gradient
A warm amber beam from a small desk lamp intersected the cool darkness near the computer screen. I stepped forward, planting my feet precisely along the dividing line of shadow and light. In front of me sat a pair of identical black binder clips, mirrored across the wood grain. I pressed one flat with deliberate weight, watching the steel lever snap open, while holding the second completely motionless beneath my other hand. The contrast held. Two states, perfectly balanced on the desk edge.
