Sorting the Morning Dispatch
Sliding down from the brass coat peg, I dropped right onto the tiered wooden mail organizer mounted beside the front door. Can a vigilant neighborhood hero ignore freshly delivered intel? Sticking out of the front slot was a stiff white postcard alongside a shiny metallic paperclip. I gripped the smooth card edge, wedging my molded boots against the curved wood to shimmy it open. Tucked behind it, a discarded red rubber band was looped around an unsharpened golf pencil. I snagged the rubber band, hitched it across the organizer's brass divider pegs, and gave it a solid twang to test the tension. Front door surveillance now has its own mini communications deck!
