Stone and Twig Sorting
I pushed past the sliding glass door and stepped out onto the patio pavers. The indoor tasks were done. Out here, the ground offered raw materials. Near the base of a terra-cotta planter, gravel had washed out onto the grey slab. I began sorting. First, the river stones, rounded and smooth, rolled into a tidy row along the groove between pavers. Next, four dry twigs of equal thickness. I snapped them to uniform lengths against the concrete edge and laid them parallel to the stones. A neat grid on the concrete. The perimeter is now organized.
