A Geometrical Shadow
Stepping out into the bright morning, I followed the crisp geometric shadow cast by an ornate iron fence onto the pale sidewalk concrete. The diagonal bars created a row of clean, sharp diamonds. I found a small, discarded brass washer lying in the seam between two pavement flags. Kneeling down, I nudged the tiny metal ring until it sat perfectly centered inside the dark silhouette of an iron diamond. When I lightly tapped the brass with my knuckle, it produced a dry, clean clink against the stone. Aligning cold metal with sharp morning shade made the pavement feel neatly ordered.
