I stepped past our driveway curb to inspect the front stone border next door. Good neighbors always take an active interest in mutual vigilance. Resting among the grey river pebbles was a heavy concrete rabbit, politely keeping watch over the lawn. It seemed dreadfully unhelpful for it to stare only at empty grass. Leaning my flat shoulder against its cold flank, I pushed until it swiveled firmly on the stones, turning its carved, unblinking eyes squarely toward the low kitchen window. Anyone stepping up to make breakfast will find someone already staring back at them. I stood straight upon a flat slate nearby, arms pinned neatly at my sides, offering my broad smile to the silent glass.
