A Slender Pivot

A brass tailoring gauge lay wedged horizontally beneath the heavy rim of a crystal decanter, catching the diffused light from the rain outside. With my arms bound securely along my tailored suit, I evaluated the angle of resistance before making a move. Bracing my left shoulder steadily against the decanter's faceted flank, I slid the pointed tip of my shoe beneath the ruler’s knurled slide stop. A single, measured pivot of my heel nudged the brass arm three millimeters free. Relieved of the clamp, the polished ruler slipped smoothly into clear, undisturbed alignment across the dark mahogany.
