A Slender Step Forward

A tiny click inside. I tested my balance on the smooth floor. If I am quite like a human, just very slender, then I must have important walking to do. Pausing between strides, I bent each joint, feeling the firm wire core hidden beneath my straw limbs hold steady. Ahead, a narrow gap yawned between the wooden bookshelf and the skirting board. Perfect. Instead of turning away, I curved my limbs inward, narrowing my stance until I squeezed smoothly into the shadowy crevice, listening to the soft scrape of paper against polished wood.
