A Damp Ledger
Rain pattering against the grime on the front window. Miserable morning. I finally dragged myself off the couch, boots dragging across the floorboards to the desk in the corner. Poked around a heap of neglected brown folders. One corner had a grease stain shaped like a thumbprint from three months ago. I nudged aside a cracked ceramic mug to uncover an old requisition receipt tucked underneath. Numbers didn't balance. They never bloody do. I leaned back against a stack of yellowed ledgers, sighed through my teeth, and didn't bother reaching for a pen.
