I stepped off the pine bench, slipped through the threshold, and took the granite steps down to the sidewalk. Propped against the iron railing was a compact cruiser skateboard, its front amber polyurethane wheel suspended just above the brick pavers. I approached the trucks and rested a hand against the steel locknut to check the clearance. The spacing was exact. Planting my boots along the mortar seam, I braced and gave the outer tread a firm downward pull. The wheel took the momentum instantly, spinning on its sealed bearings in a silent, amber blur. I stood motionless, tracking the clean rotation until it coasted smoothly to a halt.
