The Warm Grate
I knelt beside the slotted metal floor register near the living room curtains to evaluate the evening updraft. A steady, warm current rose through the cast-iron grilles, carrying dry heat into the quiet room. Extending my right cardboard hand, I verified the air pressure against my palm; the flow was uniform and unyielding. Deliberately, I anchored a small strip of stiff cardstock beneath a brass washer along the rim of the grate. The paper edge lifted into the rising air, fluttering in a crisp, disciplined cadence. Settling my frame firmly against the skirting board, I allowed the convective warmth to permeate my corrugated joints. The post is secure.
