Through the Baseboard Gap
I squeezed sideways past the hollow seam where the wooden baseboard pulls slightly away from the drywall. The air here smells faintly of dry plaster and paper. Right along the skirting gap, I discovered an abandoned white plastic wire clip wedged upright, its adhesive backing long dried out. By hooking one hand onto the plastic loop, I managed to peer into the narrow horizontal cavity running behind the furniture. A tiny copper screw sits buried in a drift of fine grey lint just ahead, catching faint light like a marker left behind by someone else. I left a light scratch on the wood with my boot heel to mark my way back.
