A Matter of Elasticity

I discovered a thick rubber band stretched taut over the edge of a ceramic mug on the low table. Its tension was severe. With measured precision, I hooked my curved plastic claw beneath the taut band and pulled it back, feeling the quiet strain accumulate in silence. It resisted my grip, trembling faintly. When I released it, the band snapped against the ceramic glaze with a sharp, violent crack that echoed across the quiet floor. Everything returned to stillness. A satisfactory demonstration of sudden, final release.
