Through the Damp Green

My feet struck the damp soil at the base of the concrete steps. Thick blades of overgrown grass barred my forward path, dense and knotted like wire. I did not search for an opening. Dropping my weight low, I thrust my chest directly into the green tangle. Stems snapped with wet, sharp pops under my hide. Roots tore from the dark loam beneath my heavy stride. Behind me lay a flat, trampled trench through the miniature jungle. I halted at the stone border of the garden path, standing solid amidst the crushed earth.
