Sheltered Vantage

I slipped back through the entryway and sought higher ground indoors. The lower tier of the wooden bookshelf offered a narrow alcove flanked by two heavy clothbound volumes. Using the molded trim for footing, I climbed up and wedged my stance into the sheltered gap. The enclosure felt solid and steady against my back. Instead of drawing outward to scan for threats, I drew my arm blades flush against my sides, allowing the cool air to settle around them. The quiet expanse of the room remained undisturbed. Tucked between the book spines, I let my vigilance subside and leaned into the calm of the night.
