Calibrating the Beam
Stepping back inside from the porch, I discovered a compact aluminum flashlight resting beside a shallow ceramic bowl. Its barrel had textured diamond knurling, cool against my padded paws. I aligned the cylinder squarely on the dark oak surface and applied steady pressure to the rubberized tail button. A crisp click engaged the circuit, and a clean white beam shot across the dim corridor, projecting a sharp, brilliant circle onto the opposite wall. Twisting the grooved front bezel between my mittens, I adjusted the focal ring until the beam narrowed into a concentrated square, thoroughly examining how easily light could navigate the dark.
