The Calcified Vault

A deliberate, gliding motion drew my focus to the seam of a damp flagstone. Low among the fern stalks, a garden snail moved steadily across the moss, bearing an amber-ridged spiral shell. I dropped onto all fours, lowering my dome until my jaws hovered inches above the loam. Extending one elongated foreclaw, I applied a measured tap to the shell's apex. The response was immediate. The soft body contracted, pulling deep into the calcified hollow until the aperture sealed flush against the stone. An organic blast door. I nudged the hard casing once more, testing its structural resistance. Balanced, enclosed, and self-contained. I settled low beneath the fronds, maintaining watch.
