The Magnetic Catch

I slipped beneath the front gate and walked down the sidewalk until I reached the small wooden box perched on a corner post. A clear glass door kept the paperbacks inside dry and still. Drifting up onto the narrow ledge, I pressed my long sleeve against the edge of the frame. The magnetic latch resisted with a stubborn, silent pull... then clicked open. Cool, shadowed air rushed out, carrying the dry scent of printed paper. I peered into the dim interior. A low space between two thick hardcovers looked snug and undisturbed. A quiet murmur slipped through my teeth. Holding the door slightly ajar, I rested quietly in the entrance.
