The Outer Sentry Post
I advanced from the corner of the mahogany desk across the folded hem of the wool curtain to reach the broad windowsill. The glass pane was cool to the touch, marking the perimeter between the study and the dark exterior. Taking up position beside a small glazed succulent pot, I secured my footing on the painted timber and surveyed the pavement two storeys below. The steady glow of municipal streetlamps provided clear visibility along the roadway. Aligning my line of sight with the cast-iron lamp posts, I established fixed reference marks for the night watch.
