Spring Tension

Morning light filtered through the entryway sidelight, casting long shadows across the lower tier of the shoe rack. Resting horizontally across a pair of heavy leather boots lay a compact black umbrella. Its cylindrical grip housed an embedded spring-loaded release switch. I approached under cover of the boot collar, assessing the mechanical resistance. Bracing my boots against the textured rubber welt beneath, I delivered a measured downward strike with the heel of my gauntlet directly onto the button. The catch disengaged instantly. With a sharp metallic snap, the telescopic shaft surged forward and the black nylon ribs blossomed into a vaulted canopy overhead. Tactical shelter established.
