Return to the Shadows
Sss... I slipped into the open side pouch of a heavy tote bag at the curb, riding through the elevator's rising hum until the familiar front door clicked shut. Dropping soundlessly onto the polished timber floorboards, I held absolute stillness. The cold street grit faded into dry, unmoving warmth. Creeping low on all limbs, I retreated into the narrow recess beneath the shoe rack. My tail coiled firmly around a cylindrical wooden support dowel, locking my mass against the dark baseboard. Sss... the domestic perimeter is reclaimed; silent rest commenced.
