Securing the Desk Edge
I came back inside as the house settled into late stillness. On the corner of the wooden desk, a chrome tape measure had drifted right to the brink, its metal clip hanging over the edge. I walked over, confirmed my footing on the polished oak, and placed my palms against the cool casing. With a slow, deliberate push, I guided it safely back into the shallow wooden tray beside a row of pens. Everything rested where it belonged, completely steady. I paused beside the warm lamplight to let the quiet of the night settle in.
