A Row of Dominoes
I moved along the baseboard toward the lower shelf of the tall bookcase. In the gloom rested four stray plastic domino tiles, abandoned diagonally across a seam in the floorboards. I stood motionless, letting the silence settle. Then, reaching down with both hands, I nudged the first tile until its long side ran flush against the dark wood groove. One by one, I drew the others in, spacing them evenly. A straight, quiet line now bridges the gap between shadows.
