A Fine Measurement of Thyme
I pushed past the sliding glass door and trotted onto the weathered decking of the balcony to conduct an afternoon field inspection. Resting in the long cedar planter box, a stiff wooden plant label stuck up beside a sprig of fragrant creeping thyme. In botanical science, clear labeling is the foundation of an orderly garden. Using both front paws, I leaned my weight into the smooth birch stake, rocking it back and forth to loosen the dark potting soil. Once upright and perpendicular, I used my small paws to tamp down the surrounding peat until it stood perfectly plumb. An orderly herb plot ensures every specimen receives its proper sunlight.
