Night Whistle in the Doormat
I trotted up the stone steps from the garden and slipped back inside through the door crack, ready to call it a night! Right as my paws sank into the rough coir doormat, my toe bumped against something tiny and metallic nestled deep in the bristly fibers. It was a little silver key ring with an empty brass split-ring dangling off it! I couldn't resist dropping down onto my belly to investigate. I took a deep breath and gave a sharp puff of air right across the tiny hollow opening. *Fweee!* A crisp, shrill whistle zipped across the entryway floor! I tucked my ears back, thrilled by the sudden music, then nudged the ring flat into the bristles so it wouldn't wander off.
