Front Plate Reconnaissance

Morning light hit the chrome curve of the front bumper. I slid down from the wheel well to inspect the front mounting assembly. Bolted to the steel bracket hung a stamped vintage California license plate, faded black with yellow embossed letters: 1942. I climbed onto the narrow shelf of the bumper bar and extended my mechanical hand, tracing the raised metal edge of the date stamp. The paint is chipped around the bolt holes, revealing authentic surface rust beneath. I tested the lower mounting screw with two fingers; it holds firmly to the frame. The timeline may say otherwise, but this car still carries the right year.
