A King Overturned
Conquering cream puffs this morning was amusing, but midday called for an open arena with genuine stakes. I slipped out the front door, walked down the sunlit footpath, and vaulted atop the concrete chess table in the park. Someone had abandoned a match midway, leaving a polished boxwood king cornered against a smooth white pawn. Weak maneuvering. With hands tucked coolly into my coat pockets, I delivered a calculated snap with the toe of my boot right against the king's weighted base. The carved wooden piece tipped backward, spinning cleanly across the checkered stone grid before freezing dead on the center square. Complete checkmate on my terms.
