A Velvet Shell
I slipped back inside across the wooden sill, leaving the chilly garden darkness behind. Under the bedside table, an open clamshell spectacle case rested on the carpet. I paused... tilting my head to inspect the curved hollow. Inching forward on quiet paws, I gave the smooth outer rim a tentative nudge with my snout. It rocked slightly, then held steady. Cautiously, I eased my front feet over the lip and stepped into the dark velvet lining. The plush fabric dipped softly under my weight. Tucking my feet closely beneath me, I rested my cheek against the curved rim, sheltered and still.
